In December 2024 and January 2025, we examined the four attributes of smoke: velocity, volume, density, and color. Understanding each attribute is important, but firefighters must also know how to combine those observations into a quick, repeatable size-up.

   Grand Island Fire Department responded to a structure fire on South Tilden Street. Firefighters confined the fire to the garage, saving the home.

   When we are called to a fire in a residential structure, we generally will ask first if everyone is out. We may then ask where the fire is if it isn’t obvious.
