Pat Moore (left) presented an award to Bill Lundy of York, who retired as secretary-treasurer of the NSVFA. Lundy and his wife, Pam, have been involved with the NSVFA Board for more than 20 years.

Lundy serves 20 plus years

This is it! My final article for the Nebraska Firefighter as your Secretary/Treasurer. It has been an interesting twenty plus years of being a part of the NSVFA. Good times and great friends and a lot of hard work. I want to wish the new officers of the NSVFA the best of luck as they look forward to another year as the voice of the volunteer fire and rescue service of the State of Nebraska. The NSVFA is in good hands; Advance Association Management has the day-to-day operations of the NSVFA down and is providing great service to the Association and I am confident that they will continue to provide first class service to the Association. I am not planning to go away and hope to stay involved in the Association but not as an elected member of the Executive Board. I promise to help in any way I can, to make the transition as smooth as possible to ensure a continuation of NSVFA business.

I want to thank all the members of the NSVFA for helping as we worked for a better Association. I think I have seen over twenty different presidents and a strong effort by the Board to make sure we do what is right for the membership.

I would also like to thank Chadron Volunteer Fire Department for hosting the 2021 Annual Conference. I am writing this article while sitting in Chadron waiting for the Thursday Fire School and E-Board meeting to begin. We experienced some great western Nebraska hospitality.

The only event I want to highlight in this month’s article is the Recruitment and Retention Seminar that is being held in Columbus, NE, Nov. 13 & 14, 2021. If you have not had the chance to attend one of these events, please make plans to do so.  It is a great way to get reinvigorated to promote new members to your department and retain the current members you have. Think of all the time and effort it took you to train and have a member gain experience being a firefighter for your department. Adding new members is important to replace those that have left but retaining the current membership is just as important.

This is a short article and I hope to continue to see and interact with the fire service in Nebraska.  Please take care in everything you do. Remember the best call is the one that everyone goes home in the same shape they showed up in and stays healthy afterwards. We are all tired of COVID-19, but it is not done with us. Get vaccinated.

(P.S.) I need to thank my wife Pam for all of the years she helped me and proofread my article to clean up the punctuation and the wording to help make it clearer to the membership.

William “Bill” Lundy,

NSVFA Past Secretary/Treasurer
