Pierce ice rescue

Thin ice led to a rescue in Pierce County the first weekend in February. In a post on their Facebook page, Pierce Fire and Rescue shared photos of a rescue at Willow Lake. Water rescue teams were called to Willow Lake after two experienced ice fishermen found themselves on thin ice. Pierce Fire and Rescue says the two men were fishing on the lake in a spot where the ice measured 13 inches, but when the pair moved about 50 feet to a new location, the ice became too thin and broke. The pair abandoned their UTV, gear and shack as the ice broke. Pierce Fire and Rescue says this serves as a good reminder that anyone wanting to fish on the ice needs to be vigilant because incidents like this happen very quickly. “It is important to note that these were very experienced fishermen who have several decades of experience on the ice,” the Facebook post said. “They know the conditions and how to read conditions.”
