Rapid response by Hill City Volunteer Firefighters Contain Fire to a Single Alarm

   Hill City Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the 200 block of Railroad Ave, Hill City, Pennington County, SD on Aug. 7, 2023 at 6:07 a.m.

   First arriving volunteer firefighters found a fire burning with moderate smoke conditions, in a cement containment pit.

   Rapid attack by volunteer firefighters and safety trained employees confined the fire to the containment pit.

   “The employees on site did a fantastic job in assisting the fire department in removing equipment from the area and keeping those not involved away from the fire area and safe,” said Hill City Volunteer Fire Chief Howard Schrier “Their safety plan worked and worked well.”

   “All impacted railroad equipment will be fully inspected and any required maintenance that needs to be done will be completed before returning to service. Our safety plan, along with properly engineered safety equipment, worked very well today,” said Nate Anderson, Business Operations Manager of the 1880 Train. “There really was a team effort by our employees and our Hill City Volunteer Firefighters. We are very appreciative of their response and efforts in keeping our community and visitors safe.”

   No injuries to civilians, domestic animals or firefighters were reported. 

   Agencies responding included Pennington County 911, Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Hill City Ambulance Service, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
