In December 2024 and January 2025, we examined the four attributes of smoke: velocity, volume, density, and color. Understanding each attribute is important, but firefighters must also know how to combine those observations into a quick, repeatable size-up.

     The calm of a warm late summer afternoon came to an abrupt end Thursday, Sept. 21, when Humboldt County emergency personnel were dispatched to a fire in Dakota City.

     Chester Fire Department conducted a controlled burn recently with firefighters from Hebron, Deshler, Alexandria and Diller participating.

     On Sept. 19, Stanton Volunteer Fire responded to a vehicle fire at Kuehn Auto Body in Stanton. It was determined the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction.
