South Dakota Fire Schoo

July 10, 2025: Scotts Bluff County Mutual Aid Association Meeting, Scottsbluff (Rural).

During Firefighter 1 class, teaching firefighter knots is a necessary but often challenging topic to teach in a large group setting. If your experience was anything like mine, the instructor stood at the front of the classroom with a rope, demonstrating how to tie each knot.

On June 9, large smoke plumes engulfed the air surrounding the west side of Ellsworth Air Force Base. It wasn’t a real emergency.

The smoke was part of the Ellsworth Fire Department’s annual fire training which included both the South Dakota and Nebraska National Guard.

On April 22, Storm Lake firefighters took to Sunset Park for a unique training opportunity. With numerous trees down in the park it allowed ample opportunities for chainsaw operations and specialized rescue training. Hurst rescue tools, lifting air bags, chocks and cribbing were all used to complete the specialized rescue evolutions, simulating how they would efficiently and safely remove a possible trapped victim.

June 7-8, 2025: 30th Annual Iowa Firefighters Memorial Service and Candlelight Service.

June 7-8, 2025: Kansas State Firefighters Association 2025 Fire School, Scott City.

If you were to ask a police officer about their service weapon, they would not only be able to demonstrate competence in handling it but also describe its features in detail. They know their weapon intimately because they understand it can be the difference between life and death.
